The Kingwood Health Center:
Convenient, attractive and
patient-centered
At the start of 2008, the Kingwood Health Center was a stout, rectangle, dark brown building shrouded by trees, surrounded by mud puddles and nearly invisible to drivers cruising down a stretch of Route 66 known to locals as Slack Hill.
By fall, the 1970s-esque Randolph building had undergone nothing short of an extreme makeover.

Gone was the flat roof, dark siding, overgrown trees, single-pane windows and pothole-filled parking lot. In its stead was a modern, bright, efficient, cream-colored two-story abuzz with activity.
Upstairs, the Diabetes Clinic educators, endocrinologist Dr. Susanne Trost, neurologist Dr. Paul Chervin and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center cardiologist Dr. Brian Andrus all see patients. Dentist Dr. John Westbrook is also in private practice across the hall. Downstairs, outpatient physical therapy, including vestibular rehabilitation and incontinence care, is offered in an attractive new gym and more-private exam rooms.
Bought by Gifford in late 2007, the new clinic was added to help support the medical center’s growth and expand services near the Interstate 89 corridor for the convenience of patients.
Barbara Connor, who was there with her husband, diabetes patient Richard Connor, on the day we visited, said she liked the new location because it is both closer to their Chelsea home and it’s also easier to park and walk inside.
A second patient, vestibular (balance) rehabilitation patient Muriel VandeGriek of Randolph Center, called the new facility “impressive.”
That’s been the general response, said physical therapist Rachel Westbrook. “Almost universally, people have come in and said, ‘Wow, what a great space.’”
“Patients love it,” added physical therapy receptionist Sandy Ryll. “I’ve heard a lot of patients say it’s much closer to home.”
The physical therapy space, which opened in October of 2008, is also filled with updated technology. A treadmill, exercise bikes and “total gym” are all new, as is the state-of-the-art balance therapy equipment used to help patients like Muriel with vestibular and also orthopedic disorders. In addition, there are four private exam rooms and new office space for staff.
Upstairs, exam rooms look out on woods, and endocrinology registered nurse Anna Mary Page said a professional collaboration, particularly between the endocrinology practice and the Diabetes Clinic, has emerged.
“We’re a team,” she said. “We’re so here for the patients.”
